Black Cowboys

Before there were highways and automobiles, there were adventurous men and women drawn westward seeking opportunities in the open territories of the West. The open frontier was rough and dangerous, but they also were brave, tough and determined. On their horses, mules and wagons the open plains were settled.

Black cowboys were there making their presence known and making history.

Many were previously slaves, and 'cowboying' was something they did well when it came to cattle herding and tending.

Black cowboys were some of the very first settlers of the western territories. They worked as lawmen, ranchers, and skilled at many trades needed to survive open territories. Matter of fact, Black cowboys were cool before being a cowboy was cool.

Black cowboys haven't received their just representation in western movies.

When railroads became the new way of transporting cattle to Black cowboys showed their cowboy roping and cow rustling skills at rodeo competitions.

Today, horses are 'saving' Black youth and keeping the strong history of Black cowboys alive and well.
